BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. JAMES ‘CHURCH, CIVIL LINES RAEBARELI WITH EFFECT
FROM 1830 TO 2023
As per record of Diocese of Lucknow, Church of North India, Allahabad. The
Construction of St. James Church, Raebareli building completed in the year
of 1830. This period was of British Rulers in India, for British officers
and British army soldiers to worship in this church. In the year 1947 India
got Independence by the British Rulers, thereafter time to time British
officers and soldiers left India and the St. James Church building was
closed down for worshiping, since no worshipers were available to worship
in this Church. This Church was closed for a long time.
In the year 1953 one American Missionary Lady named Rev. W. H. Holestien
came to Raebareli as a Faith Missionary worker along with Rev. A L. Khaliq
as a co-worker with her. Since there was no worship place in civil lines
area, only ST. James’ Church civil lines Raebareli, which was closed
(locked) and the keys of the Church were in Administrative office in
Kolkata, after long efforts keys of the Church building were collected by
Rev. A. L Khaliq from Kolkata head office.
Again worship started in St. James church, Raebareli in the year 1953 and
first Indian pastor was Rev. A.L Khaliq, He served in this Church upto 1968
(May) 15years.
This Church was again closed down because of no Pastors postings and to
take care of this Church.
Again after two years, in the year (1970) this church was started
worshiping under the supervision of oriental missionary society(OMS),
Allahabad, Rev. George Solomon was posted in this church as a priest
in-charge . He served for two years (upto 1972). Again this Church was
closed down due to non-availability of any pastor for a long time.
Mr. H. R. Mall then LDTA Secretary, then took over the charge of CNI Church
properties in 1988, after his long efforts, the postings of Pastors were
done for worshiping by the congregation in St. .James Church Raebareli,
which is as follows:-
In the year 1988 Rev. R.K Samuel was posted here as Priest in-charge of St.
James Church Raebareli for 11 years (1999).
Assistant Pastor Rajendra singh, posted in the year (2000).He also served
for 11years upto 2011.
Rev. Sterling got posted as a Priest in-charge in the year (2011) upto
(2014).
Rev. Henry Johnson got posting in the year (2015-2017).
Rev. Jiwan Lal Masih got posting in the year (2017) till today.
Since the St. James Church Building is 193 years old and due to climatic
effect on building, maintenance of the Church building was very necessary,
the maintenance work was a huge work, keeping in view to maintain it this
maintenance work started, and being in the year 19 January 2014 by St.
James School and College’s Principal Mr. S.K.Mall.
One detailed Tablet is affixed by the side of the main gate of the Church.
Now, Church building is very attractive and inside of the church interiors
are also very much attractive.
Being the GOD’s house it looks very beautiful. This house of the LORD is
ever and ever for HIS glory, Amen.
Respectfully submitted

ST. PETER’S CHURCH, LUCKNOW
St. Peter’s Church, Lucknow is a beautiful and very well maintained Church
situated in a Railway Colony behind main Charbagh Railway Station of
Lucknow. It is a historical church as its foundation was laid by Bishop
George Herbert on 21 st March 1914, the day on which he had also
laid the foundation of Railway Station Charbagh, Lucknow. Before
construction of its building, the devotees used a nearby hall to gather and
worship our Lord. Since it was the time of British rule and most of the
railway workers were either British or Anglo Indians. A need was felt to
have a proper and consecrated place of worship hence this Church was built.
Its construction was started in December 1914 and it was consecrated on 8
th April 1915. Its design was prepared by one Mr. Lichman.
Intitially it was an Anglican church under the Anglican Diocese of
Allahabad which came under the Episcopal area of Diocese of Lucknow in 1970
when Church of North India was formed.
The Church is situated in a huge compound and surrounded with lot of trees
of teak, neem, mango, lemon and other trees. Two inscriptions bearing the
Ten Commandments are affixed at the entrance of the Church. A type four
house is in the compound which is its Parsonage. Also a Sunday school hall
and servant quarters exist in the compound. Being on the land of railways,
it is also known as Railway Church and for long its pastor was addressed as
Railway Chaplain. As per the church records, the present pastor is the 40
th Pastor of this church. (A list of all the pastors and their
duration is enclosed herewith).
The main hall of the Church is quite large and apart from 34 benches, extra
chairs are put on the galleries of both the sides as and when required. As
such the church has a capacity of about 450-500 persons to sit. About 350
members are on the membership roll of the church. A beautiful brass lectern
is kept on the left side of the main hall and a wooden pulpit is at the
right side. Its altar is also very beautiful and there are stained glasses
on its rear wall showing Lord Jesus Christ on the throne. At present most
of its members are bankers, medical staff, railway staff, teachers etc.
The Church keeps a special position in the city of Lucknow. It always had a
good choir lead by different choir leaders time to time. Its present pastor
is Rev. Henry Johnson who had served here during 2008 to 2015 also. During
his first tenure, the church was fully renovated including replacement of
roof, marble flooring, wall tiles, lighting etc.
The Church has always been standing firmly with our Diocese and in strong
faith in our saviour Lord Jesus Christ. Please keep it in your prayers.
